The History of
the Peggy J. Slusser
Memorial Philatelic Library
The Legacy of Peggy
J. Slusser
A generous gift from the parents
of Peggy J. Slusser made it possible for the
Foundation to construct the
Slusser Memorial Philatelic
Library in 1996. Ms.
Slusser was a
bright, active woman who passed away at the early age of
51.
From
childhood, she became interested in stamp collecting and
Civil War
memorabilia. Her main collecting interest was the
Confederate
States, U.S.
stamps and modern U.S. errors. Her original
childhood album is among the
personal effects retained in the
Slusser
Library.
The building was designed by award-winning architect
Les Wallach. It was
originally conceived as a
regional library of
western U.S. postal history with
exhibit space
for Peggy Slusser’s collection of Civil War memorabilia. Over
the past
decade, the library has substantially expanded its holdings
and
continues to provide an
opportunity for
research and other educational
purposes
encompassing a wide range of interests.
The Slusser Library is a member
of the Arizona Library Association
and the
American
Philatelic
Research Library as well as other state and
regional
associations.
