PHF celebrating 50th year of service in 2010
Dear APS and PHF member,
There has been much discussion lately in the AP about the demographics of stamp
collecting, the stress that philately as a whole has been experiencing, as well
as concern about involving greater numbers of youth and seniors in philately.
This letter is to invite you to visit the Postal History Foundation in Tucson,
either in person or on line at www.postalhistoryfoundation.org Our mission
involves assisting in the education of children and adults through the use of
postage stamps as well as furthering the hobby of stamp collecting. In the last
school year, our Education Director worked with over 8000 students and community
members in classrooms, libraries, and other institutions, at special events in
the community; and with significant outreach to schools and events in other cities
and states.
The Postal History Foundation is unique in the United States, combining our “YES”
project, “Youth Education thru Stamps”, with a 19th Century museum Post Office from
Naco, Arizona; a Philatelic Contract Postal Station; and the Peggy Slusser Memorial
Philatelic Library. We have over 50 volunteers who spend over 12,000 hours per
year working to process and prepare stamps for use in the education, research, and
sales departments.
The library houses in excess of 30,000 items as well as an extensive collection of
Civil War memorabilia. Currently the library holdings are being entered on line,
thanks to a grant from the Arizona State Library. The continually updated contents
are visible on the website of the Pima County Public Library
(www.library.pima.gov/research/collections/phf.php). Although we do not lend our
books, these search capabilities will allow researchers to see what is available in
our collection. We provide photocopy services and research time at cost for
questioners. See the PHF website for details of these services.
We solicit tax deductible donations of worldwide stamps, covers, and philatelic
libraries and supplies to help fund and support these purposes. Your duplicate and
unneeded materials will be welcomed and valued in a new home in Tucson, and a receipt
will be provided.
Perhaps you are planning to attend ARIPEX 2011, January 14-16, 2011, in Tucson. They
are to host The Mexico Elmhurst Philatelic Society International and the British
Caribbean Study Group.
www.aripexonline.com will provide details. Set aside a separate day in either case
to come tour for a WOW experience.
Enclosed is a membership application, as well as some additional information. Please
provide your email address with your reply so we can keep you informed about developments
at the Postal History Foundation.
